Chili & Roses

March 12, 2001
Saturday

I put a bowl of chili next to the vase filled with freshly cut roses.

My toes were cold so I grabbed a blanket and curled up in to the chair with it before grabbing the well spiced hot chili. It was a veggie chili based upon my fathers recipe. Full of eggplant, tomato, green beans, red and black beans, zucchini, carrots, onion and lots of spices. I always added some extra cumin and chili powder to mine, topping it with some grated extra sharp vermont cheddar cheese.

The cheese was all melted when I was finally settled into my chair, under the blanket, with a book to read while I ate.

I contemplated the freshly cut roses, softly lit by the lamp, as I lifted the first spoonful of chili. The flowers were for my partner to celebrate. There was nothing in particular to celebrate, no holiday or anniversary, but I had felt that the day needed some celebration. Our partnership filled me with thoughts of warmth and contentment as I continued to eat.

A little too much cumin this time but wonderfully spicy, warming me to my toes.

I ended up ignoring my book and falling asleep in the chair, only waking when my partner leaned over me to kiss me goodnight. I blinked sleepily at him and stood to hug him hello. He grinned down at me and pulled me close, slowly running his fingers through my hair.

Together we went upstairs to bed and he thanked me for the flowers. We crawled into bed, pulling the covers over our heads, and I snuggled into his body. Belly full, body warm, and heart overflowing with contentment.
